Lord of the Flies vs. A Separate Peace Essay Example for Free
Lord of the Flies vs. A Separate Peace Essay In the World Book Dictionary, jealousy is defined as being in an envious condition or feeling. Many can relate to this feeling, because they have personally experienced jealousy before. Although these people may share a similar feeling, the way each individual acts upon his/her feeling is different. Some just ignore their jealous feeling, hoping that it would quickly go away so that they can go on with their daily lives. Others become so overwhelmed that they actually may act on their emotions, expecting that their action would make them feel better. Usually, the contrary occurs. The person does not feel better about himself; instead, bitter feelings, a loss of respect, or even a loss of friendship are common consequences. In the novels Lord of the Flies by William Golding and A Separate Peace by John Knowles, the characters Jack and Gene both experience jealously towards another person, and their actions, motivations, and feelings all circumnavigate around jealousy. In Lord of the Flies, once Jack realizes that Ralph is going to become chief, he totally changes and becomes the antagonist. First of all, Jack acts out on his jealousy by attempting to harm Ralph. Although Jacks scheme to kill Ralph is unsuccessful, Ralph is still very close to death. In the novel, the reader knows that Jack is plotting to kill Ralph because Samneric informs Ralph, Theyre going to hunt you tomorrow[Jack] sharpened a stick at both ends. When Samneric reports that Jack sharpened a stick at both ends, they imply that Jacks cult plans to decapitate Ralph and stick the prized possession on an end of the stick like it did to the sow. Jack desires to use the head as an offering for the Beastie, a fictional monster that the boys believe haunts the island. As stated before, Jack decides to create a clan from his motivations that arise because of his jealousy. Moreover, since Jack knows that Ralph is always going to be elected chief no matter how many times the group of boys vote, Jack starts his own clan and elects himself as chief. When he does this, he openly tells his colleagues, Anyone who wants to hunt when I do can come too. By stating this, he is simply persuading people to support his feat. As Jack plans the death of Ralph, he does not feel any sense of remorse or guilt for plotting to kill his old friend. Jack is just excited that there will be a big hunt for Ralph. Gene also transforms drastically in A Separate Peace after he realizes that he will never be as athletic as Finny. Finny has always been able to accomplish goals and achievements that no one else can reach. Furthermore, Gene becomes jealous. In response to his covetousness, Gene harms Finny by [taking] a step toward [Finny], and then [Genes] knees bent and [Gene] jounced the limb. Gene does this so quickly that he does not realize the consequences in jerking the tree limb. He does not know that his action would affect the rest of Finnys life. Unlike Jack though, Gene does not seek the support of his friends. All Gene wants is for Finny to understand that Gene did not hurt Finny on purpose, and he is greatly sorry. However, when Gene attempts to explain this to Finny, Finny just brushes it off and tries to convince Gene otherwise. He says, I dont know, I must have just lost my balance. It must have been thatI just fell. Another difference is that after Gene shakes the limb and makes Finny fall and break his leg, he feels guilty about his act of jealousy. Gene actually goes up to Finny numerous times to explain that Gene was actually the one who made Finny break his leg, but Finny does not listen. Finny just stubbornly sticks to his reason to [being] clumsy and not watching where [he] was stepping. Ultimately, Gene is immersed with sorrow and guilt. His envy for Finny not only backfires; it creates endless shame and remorse. In the novels Lord of the Flies by William Golding and A Separate Peace by John Knowles, the main characters actions, motivations, and feelings are all outcomes of their jealousy towards another. Jack and Gene share the similarity of attempting to harm another due to their envious motivation. Yet, they are different as seen through their ultimate feelings. Both Jack and Gene aspire to become equal to their rivals, even if they must harm their friends to accomplish self-fulfillment. In the end, Gene suffers from guilt while Jack cannot be more pleased when his newly established clan obeys him to kill Ralph. Richard Griper says it best: Jealousy is nothing unless you act upon it.

Psychological Benefits of Sports on Youth
Psychological Benefits of Sports on Youth Jonathan Johnson Taking part in game can enhance the personal satisfaction of people and groups, push social consideration, enhance health, counter hostile to social conduct, raise singular respect toward oneself and certainty, and augment skylines. (sportscotland, 2003, p7) Consistent interest in physical movement (PA) is basic for great health. Animated individuals profit from larger amounts of health-related fitness and are at easier danger of creating numerous distinctive handicapping therapeutic conditions than idle individuals. It is broadly recognized that the health profits of interest in PA are not restricted to physical health additionally fuse mental segments. Far reaching exploration has brought about clear suggestions of the level of PA needed to prepare health profits. There are particular health-related proposals for youngsters and youths different from those for grown-ups. For individuals matured 5ââ¬â17 years it is proposed that they attempt moderate or incredible exercises for no less than 60 minutes for every day. Customary support of this level of action by youngsters and youths can bring about expanded physical fitness, decreased muscle to fat ratio ratios, great cardiovascular and metabolic malady danger profiles, upgraded bone health and decreased manifestations of wretchedness and tension. Whilst numerous diverse health profits of support in PA are recognized, the lions share of examination has centered on the physical health profits of support in PA, with less research concentrated on the mental and social health angles. Despite the fact that mental health profits have been referenced in late rules, to date lacking proof blocks decisions about the negligible or ideal sorts or measures of physical action for mental health (Part G Section 8 p39) Despite the fact that the World Health Organization definition of health (2006) consolidates physical, mental and social health areas, the examination giving proof to the PA rules does not particularly address social health. On the other hand, the expositive expression briefing PA rules does propose that viewpoints, for example, social help may help a percentage of the descriptions of mental health results. The addressed to mental or social health profits from sport. In this setting, the accompanying definitions were received: sport a human movement of accomplishing a effect obliging physical effort or physical expertise which, by its temperament and association, is aggressive and is for the most part acknowledged as being a sport. health ââ¬â a state of complete physical, mental and social prosperity and not just the non appearance of sickness and ailment; mental of alternately alluding to the brain or to the procedures of the brain, for example, considering, feeling, sensing, and the like(p475) mental health ââ¬â Mental Health alludes to an expansive exhibit of exercises specifically or by implication identified with the mental prosperity part included in the WHOs meaning of healthâ⬠¦ It is identified with the advancement of prosperity, the counteractive action of mental issue, and the medication furthermore recovery of individuals influenced by mental scatters social: I dentifying with the associations of people, especially as parts of an aggregation or a group (p475); social health: That extent of a singulars prosperity that concerns how he gets alongside other individuals, how other individuals respond to him, and how he associates with social establishments and societal mores. (p 152). In this study, we likewise utilized the accompanying terms: mental ââ¬â as an equivalent word for mental; furthermore psychosocial â⬠¦ any circumstance in which both mental and social elements are expected to play a part (p638). Sports is a physical activity which sets on rules and help to maintained individual health by different In the world sports is a very popular activity which is play important physical, psychological and social development significances for those children and youth involved. Children and Youth are mentally and physically fit those are participating in sports. Sports are supposed to play a main part in improving childrenââ¬â¢s health and good for years to come. According to an author (Price-Mitchell, 2014) idea of youth sports have reason that sports helps children in developed teamwork abilities, make person self-confidence, it also helps in overcome the trauma and any injury, build good character and other personal strengths. (Price-Mitchell, 2014) THE EXTRAPOLATION OF ACHIEVEMENT inspiration hypothesis to the domain of focused games has fixated on the two operational ideas of dispositional parts of accomplishment objectives (undertaking and personality inclusion) and situational parts of accomplishment objectives (dominance and execution group atmosphere; Duda, 1992; Duda Nicholls, 1992; Roberts, 1992). Errand and inner self objective viewpoints are thought to reflect the way in which a player translates triumph, disappointment, and subsequently his or her level of games capability. Training specialists have found that assignment included people naturally characterize capability as far as referenced toward oneself benchmarks of execution, for example, undertaking dominance, satisfaction of potential, and aptitude change (Ames Archer, 1988; Nicholls, 1984, 1992), while personality included people judge individual skill on the support of other-referenced measures, for example, beating adversaries and exhibiting predominant cap acity (Jagacinski Nicholls, 1987; Nicholls, 1989). The specific accomplishment objective introduction that a competitor embraces may be influenced by situational elements display inside the evaluative setting (Duda, 1992). Authority and execution situated atmospheres inside the classroom have been joined to errand included and sense of self included intentions, separately, prescribing that motivational atmosphere assumes a persuasive part in the advancement of singular objective introductions around scholars (Ames Archer, 1988). An authority atmosphere has a tendency to advertise positive influence at the class, more versatile taking in methodologies, and more stupendous test looking for practices around its understudies, although an execution atmosphere empowers regularizing or other-referenced norms of victory that regularly process easier recognized capacity in learners consequent to disappointment results (Ames, 1992; Ames Archer, 1988). Understanding what factors influence positive youth development has been advocated by youth development researchers ((P. L. Benson, 2006; J. S. Eccles J. A. Gootman, 2002).) Body Mental studies on the quality of youth games offer wide bits of knowledge into youngster advancement and frequently repudiate each other. Since nobody youngster is precisely like an alternate, folks who comprehend the profits and pitfalls of games and who give careful consideration to the unique necessities of their kids are more inclined to bring children that flourish up in life. Generally, studies show three critical parts of games support that influence positive youth advancement force, coherence, and equalization. A synthesis of every one of the three offers the best profits to children..( Mitchell, 2012) Intensity The measure of time kids use completing games every week is especially imperative to if they accept positive developmental results from their support. Kids who invest more of an opportunity in games exercises have more amazing profits than youth who partake at easier levels or not in the slightest degree. With more terrific time duty, youngsters create better dominance of abilities and predominant information of strategies and technique. This can prompt the advancement of key speculation which is useful in all parts of life, including the capacity to discover and outperform in the occupation market. Nobody can let you know how long of games for every week is the ideal measure. The significant taking in is that kids who make a guarantee to normal practice accept more amazing developmental profits. The security and span of how youngsters take part over their juvenile years is additionally essential. Studies infer that discontinuous support throughout the center and secondary school years is not as gainful as persistent commitment. Setting aside a few minutes encourages the probability that kids will overcome tests and obstructions in their execution. They additionally have more stupendous chances to connect with buddies, figuring out how to adapt to the interpersonal tests of working with others. This is a significant part of creating activity, an inner quality that endures a lifetime. Maybe the most paramount of the three parts of youth games interest is to attain a harmony between games and different exercises. Studies demonstrate that more terrific developmental conclusions are accomplished by kids who invest time in exercises other than their predominant games hunts. It is not so much the amounts of exercises in which youth take an interest yet rather that they have outlets past games. Case in point, one study discovered youth who took part in games and school clubs had easier rates of melancholy than children who centered solely on games. Different studies prescribe that youngsters who partake in exercises that present certifiable tests, such as volunteering in their groups, attain more terrific developmental profits. These exercises urge youth to create a community character and see a world past a session of winning and losing. References Holt, N. L. (Ed.). (2008).Positive youth development through sport. This Really Sucks :: essays research papers
C.G.Jung's comment, "The unconscious mind of man sees correctly even when the conscious reason is blind and impotent", is indicative to Margaret Atwood's book The Edible Woman. We see how the unconscious affects a woman mind unknowingly. The mind and body have an inter connection. They work with each other even though the conscious mind may not know it. Atwood's main character, Marian McAlpin, was ordinary. After she graduated college she started her simplistic job. Her relationships with people, friends, and her boyfriend, were purely surface. She began feeling crippled by the mundaneness of her already mapped out life. She feared the thought of being the annoying old lady in the basement. She feared living a married life with children, miserable like Carla. She feared the very thought of the "pension plan" for it symbolized the future. A future she hadn't began to question until she met Duncan. We see a shift of characteristics between Duncan and Marian. Her job is to chew up words to make it easier for people to read and understand and then test these people with her revisions. Duncan, however, treats the test as a psychological evaluation ex amplifying that one should think and question what is simplistic. This is what Marian begins to do. She needed to escape the thoughts that resided in her unconscious mind. She feared being pinned down. We get images of this through out the book. Her thoughts of cannibalism represents her fear of consumption. Destruction. Peter erupts these feelings inside her. His proposal of marriage charged her with such irrational fear that her physical self started to react to her unconscious self. Her inability of eating animals was a major symbol of her not wanted to pin down life. This transgressed to not being able to eat vegetables, because they too seemed life like to her. One can argue that she was only able to eat pasta and beans because they are starchy and stiff. They fill her but do not pose as a threat to her for they aren't needed to live and aren't life like. She begins to act neurotic, like Duncan. We get a glimpse of his unconscious mind with his obsession of ironing things. His unconscious mind needs to straighten out and un-wrinkle. He controls this. He feels comfort in p ressing out the most wrinkled items. Another interesting character in the book is Marian's roommate Ainsley.

Lockhart1 Taylor Lockhart B4 Thoughtful Laughter in The Importance of Being Earnest The Importance of Being Earnest Written, written in 1854, by Oscar Wilde, discusses many social matters occurring in the 19th century. Since The Importance of Being Earnest is a comedy, it ââ¬Å"awakens thoughtful laughterâ⬠(George Meredith). This comedic play often awakens thoughtful laughter, or laughter that makes someone ponder more about important issues. One of many of the primary instances of this is created by the ideas of marriage and love is a social device during this era. The characters didnââ¬â¢t fall in love because there was a romantic spark or that they felt a love connection with one another, they fell in love because the people they loved had a specific name, history, physical characteristics or economic status. Gwendolen confesses to Jack, or his confidante Ernest, ââ¬Å"The moment Algernon first mentioned to me that he had a friend called Ernest, I knew I was destined to love youâ⬠(10). That quote proved that Gwendolenââ¬â¢s drive to marry ââ¬Å"Ernestâ⬠for him having the name Ernest, rather than marrying him for his character. Cecily also confesses something along the same lines as Gwendolen to Algernon, that even though she had never met him before she fell in love with him: ââ¬Å"Well, ever since dear Uncle Jack first confessed to us that he had a younger brother who was very wicked and bad, you of course have formed the chief topic of conversationâ⬠¦a man who is much talked about is always very attractiveâ⬠¦I daresay it was foolish of me, but I fell in love with you, Ernestâ⬠(32). She is led to believe that Algernonââ¬â¢s real name is Ernest. Cecily and Gwendolen are attracted to Jack and ââ¬Å"Ernestâ⬠because of their histories. Gwendolen wa s excited to find o... ...Lady Bracknell was excited to hear that Cecily has wealth; she almost instantaneously consented to her marriage to Algernon. Wilde uncovers the frivolousness of their proclaimed love by displaying how Lady Bracknell would only consent for Lockhart 3 marriage if the partner came from a wealthy background, instead of falling in love because you actually loved that person. Wilde ââ¬Å"awoke laughterâ⬠in The Importance of Being Earnest. Wilde showed rather than falling in love because you actually liked a person, the people of the Victorian Era fell in love solely on minute details such as physical features, a personââ¬â¢s name, or how much wealth they had. The comedy comes into play when Wilde pokes fun at the process of falling in love, because the characters rush falling in love with the right person, the audience compares the characterââ¬â¢s reality with the worldââ¬â¢s reality.
Theatrical Sound Designer :: Essays Papers
Theatrical Sound Designer The sound designer is responsible for handling the audio requirements of a theatrical performance. This includes the creation of sound effect cues, sound reinforcement, mixing, and possibly Foley. ââ¬Å"Sound designers develop the aural, or sound, cues crucial to playââ¬â¢s mood. Running water, traffic, the murmuring of a crowd or the strains of music are the kinds of sound effects used as an integral part of a production.â⬠(Mauro p.96) Along with the creation of sound, the sound designer must work in concert with all members of the design team from the lighting designer to the set designer, in order to create a total package. One of the first jobs a sound designer has is to read the script and create an effects cue sheet. A cue sheet is a list of the sound effects needed during a performance as determined by stage direction or intuition, such as a telephone ring, thunder, or the sound of a passing train. These sound effects may be created live during the performance using Foley, but more often than not the sound designer will utilize a keyboard and sampler, a CD player, or even a cassette tape deck. Depending on the theater the sound designer may have to employ some sound reinforcement techniques, such as micing the actors with wireless microphones or placing microphone such as PZMs on or around the stage. All of these signals are then routed through a mixing broad, which the sound designer operates during the performance. Although no formal training is required, experience in audio engineering, music theory, and basic stagecraft would be very beneficial. ââ¬Å"Working in radio or for a studio that dubs sound cues in music could provide excellent experience.â⬠(Mauro p.102) Most literature recommends an apprenticeship for breaking into the business, tacking a position as a sound person for example. A sound person implements the requirements but forth by sound designers and might also be expected to place the microphones and speakers. A sound person can expect to make anywhere from $250 to $1250 a week. (Field p.271-273) Depending on the market and venue a sound designer can expect to make $300-$1000 a week, to $100,000 a show for a Broadway production.

Path to Veterinary Technician Essay
Every person lives to bring self-satisfaction to their life- to find a purpose. Sometimes that self-satisfaction comes from leadership jobs such as being a politician, and sometimes that feeling comes from humanitarian jobs like being a psychologist. However, that incredible feeling of self-satisfaction can also come from careers that donââ¬â¢t directly involve helping people, but involve helping animals. For some, that career might be to become a veterinary technician. It takes effort for one to achieve a dream and obtain that self-satisfaction, and understanding the road one must take to become a veterinary technician is just as important as understanding the road one takes after achieving it, because new and exciting paths open up after that goal is reached. What exactly does being a veterinary technician entail? Think of a nurse, but rather than assisting a doctor and helping human patients, they assist veterinarians and tend to animals. That being said, a veterinary technician must enjoy being around animals and have a desire to help those in need. A veterinary technician will usually perform clinical work, such as blood tests, urinalysis, they can expose and develop x-rays, assist in a variety of diagnostic tests and more while under supervision of a licensed veterinarian. The typical patients helped by a veterinary technician are cats and dogs, but in reality, a veterinary technician can tend to any type of animal. According to VeterinaryTechnican. com, many veterinary technicians work in a clinical setting such as an animal hospital or private veterinarianââ¬â¢s office. Additionally, many of them work in zoos, aquariums, and research facilities (2012). A veterinary technician can also become a specialist with additional schooling to perform procedures such as anesthesia, surgery, dental work, behavioral training and more. The Bureau of Labor Statistics claims that while many veterinary technicians find satisfaction from their job, it is also an occupation that can prove to be physically and emotionally demanding, as well as dangerous. Their statistics show that full-time veterinary technicians experienced a work-related injury and illness rate that was much higher than the national average (2011). Reasons for this can be because the veterinary technician is vulnerable to being bitten, scratched, and lunged at by an animal, as well as being exposed to viruses that they animals might be carrying. When someone considers careers, one of the first things that will come to mind is the required education. Questions such as, ââ¬Å"How many years of schooling do I need? â⬠and ââ¬Å"What schools are the best options for me? â⬠need to be explored fully before making a decision. The path to becoming a veterinary technician begins with high school courses, such as Biology, Math, and Science. For continued education, there are several colleges that offer veterinary technology programs that are accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). A veterinary technician program must be accredited by the AVMA in order for the student to become a veterinary technician. Typically, AVMA courses take around two years to finish, granting the student an associateââ¬â¢s degree. Some colleges have created AVMA accredited courses that take about four years to complete, which will reward a bachelorââ¬â¢s degree upon completion. VeterinaryTechnician. com states that after the student receives their degree, the student must pass a state-administered licensing exam, after which the student can start working with veterinary technicians as a trainee (2012). Naturally, the time spent being a trainee depends on the amount of hands-on experience that the student had prior to becoming one. Now that the expectations for college have been set, a person must figure out how to finance their continued education. Being able to finance college in order to get the career started is one of the most frustrating and difficult things in the United States. College normally costs thousands of dollars and often leads to a lifetime of debt. What the majority of students do not know, however, is that there are scholarships for just about anything that can pay for most or all of the schooling! NCVTSA. org says that several awards are available from the National Association of Veterinary Technicians, but there are also private awards available (n. d. ). One of the top scholarships for this cause is the American Kennel Club and Hartz Veterinary Technician Scholarship Program. This particular scholarship is available to full-time students who attend an AVMA accredited college. In order to be considered for the scholarship, the student must be a student member of the National Association of Veterinary Technicians (NAVTA). Another good scholarship is called the American Kennel Club Veterinary Technician Student Scholarship, where several scholarships are given each year totaling to $25,000. The student must also be a NAVTA member to qualify, and the application requirements include a brief essay explaining their interests, education, research and work experience, as well as recent college transcripts submitted by April each year. Those are only two of the several veterinary technician scholarships available. Especially in this economy, an additional concern that a person might have before they begin their career is how stable the job market is and how well the job pays. No one would want to spend multiple years and waste thousands of dollars on schooling to realize that it is nearly impossible be hired into the career that they signed up for. However, there is good news for veterinary technicians. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook will increase by 36% by the year 2018, which is much faster than the average for all occupations. Pet owners are becoming more affluent and are more willing to pay for advanced veterinary care because many of them consider their pet to be part of the family. The Bureau further stated that there are relatively few veterinary technician graduates each year, and fewer than 3,800 students move onward to become veterinary technicians. Thus, the market is not overflowing with recent graduates trying to become employed. While the job market may be stable for veterinary technicians, the career does not pay a substantial amount. A standard licensed veterinary technician earns from $31,000 to $35,000 a year. If a veterinary technician decided to further their education and become a specialist, depending on the specialty that they would focus on, they can earn a much higher income. For example, a veterinary technician anesthesia specialist earns, on average, $48,000 a year. Like many aspirations to feel self-satisfied, becoming a veterinary technician will take time, dedication and work to obtain. It may not require as much schooling as a psychologist and it may not pay as well as a politician, but earning that feeling of self-satisfaction is what counts in a career. Understanding the road to self satisfaction is just as important as understanding the road taken after the goal is reached, because life as a veterinary technician never stays the same and offers so many different paths to choose from.

Crisis In Odwalla Corporation
The Odwalla corporation, a fruit juice producer based in California has always been a staunch supporter of natural products, though sadly those natural products created a deadly risk to at least 71 people in the fall of 1996. The company was linked to a large number of products containing apple juice that was tainted by the deadly e-coli O157:H7 bacteria. The death of a 16-month-old child in Evans, Colorado was the first of many illnesses that were directly linked to the company's products, most of which contained tainted apple juice. In fact the company ended up recalling 70% of its total product on the shelves in the United States and Canada. (Mogel, 2002, p. 222) The outbreak had been swift and the company is often praised for its quick and particularly humanitarian response to the situation. The marketing campaign they embarked on with the help of a marketing crisis management team is actually award winning. At the time of the crisis, Odwalla appeared to do everything right. It responded to what it called a freak occurrence by pulling the suspect juice and offering to pay medical expenses. The quick recall and its warm and fuzzy image prompted favorable comparisons with Johnson and Johnson for its handling of the Tylenol incident. The initial response to the problem is crucial to the marketing arena as it is a way in which businesses can see in a recent strategic situation the ways in which marketing can affect crisis management positively for a company in dire straits. Though the eventual court rulings and the findings of an inquiry did not match the public personification associated with the crisis marketing it did save the company from almost sure disaster that would likely lead to the company folding in disgrace. Certainly if the information that was discovered during the investigation, made by the courts had been available to the public during the crisis the company and its founders would have lost everything. Odwalla pleaded guilty to criminal charges of selling tainted apple juice. It paid a $1.5 million fine, the largest ever assessed in a food industry case by the Food and Drug Administration. Federal investigators now suggest that Odwalla had regularly accepted blemished fruit and ignored warnings by its own safety team. Moreover, as sales plummeted 90 percent, company officials maintained an inside/outside strategy: covering up company malfeasance while positioning Odwalla as a victim along with those who it had poisoned. Though the ethics of the situation are suspect from a business standpoint they were crucial in the future success of the company. Industry standards have since changed a great deal and Odwalla quickly stepped in line with industry standards for pasteurizing its product, something that they had long resisted but eventually in 2002 became an FDA requirement excluded only by tough labeling laws, warning consumers of the unpasteurized nature of a product. Though there are still suspicions associated with the situation, the right answers to tough crisis marketing can be found in the case studies of the situation. Odwalla acted immediately. Although at the point where they were first notified the link was uncertain, Odwalla's CEO Stephen Williamson ordered a complete recall of all products containing apple or carrot juice. This recall covered around 4,600 retail outlets in 7 states. Internal task teams were formed and mobilized, and the recall ââ¬â costing around $6.5m was completed within 48 hours. What the company didn't do was to avoid responsibility. On all media interviews, Williamson expressed sympathy and regret for all those affected and immediately promised that the company would pay all medical costs. This, allied to the prompt and comprehensive recall, went a long way towards satisfying customers that the company was doing all it could. The intended public's of the communications associated with the e-coli crisis all received the information the company intended to convey, including eventual fault in production, though this was after the crisis had been dealt with and didn't receive much air time. The intended publics received notification of the recall and everything that was being done to ensure that the problem would stop there, including new plans of action for flash pasteurization as well as a new policy associated with new industry wide changes eventually implemented by the FDA. The FDA began implementing further guidelines that required juice producers to show a specific reduction of bacteria in their juice. It is this law that has now, after years of discussion and public comment periods, come into effect. This is not a ââ¬Å"pasteurizationâ⬠law, it is a bacteria reduction law that requires juice producers to reduce the bacteria in their juice and to develop a HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) system that ensures they keep records that would among other things, enable proper recalls and trace backs if the need arose. The industry has since implemented a great deal of the new standards and come into compliance with a system that will greater protect the public. In a sense the outcome could be considered the legacy of the crisis as Odwalla has continued to be a leader in the field of food safety technology implementation that is often used as a model for other crisis situations. The success of the story can be seen in a recent work detailing the award Odwalla and its crisis management marketing firm received: An independent AOL survey showed that 86 percent of online respondents supported Odwalla and would return as consumers. Other surveys showed 94% of those polled were aware of the E. coli outbreak; 96% of those aware approved of Odwalla's handling of the crisisâ⬠¦Odwalla successfully reintroduced products after the recall, and continues to introduce new products at a normal rateâ⬠¦ (Mogel, 2002, p. 226) Additionally the financial as well as consumer confidence issue is still one that is reviewed by industry leaders as they are more likely in today's climate to create at least a minimal plan for the potential of such a problem within their own business. Odwalla also showed specific crisis management skills, with the help of their crisis consultants in their ability to quickly reach their internal as well as external public's as they instituted an internal open door policy accompanied by a collective meetings that are still held today to keep the internal public abreast with current needs and shortfalls in the company, as quickly as possible. ââ¬Å"Internal communications were key: Williamson conducted regular company-wide conference calls on a daily basis, giving employees the chance to ask questions and get the latest information. This approach proved so popular that the practice of quarterly calls survived the crisis.â⬠(ââ¬Å"CSR case studies in crisis management: Odwalla,â⬠2006, at: http://www.mallenbaker.net/csr/CSRfiles/crisis05.html) Financial markets responded to the communications effort; stock price was $19 prior to the crisis, dropped to $9 immediately after, and has risen to $13. (Mogel, 2002, p. 226) All the intended publics were clearly communicated with the best possible outcome the company could have foreseen at the beginning of the crisis. One point of intrigue is also associated with the avenues that were used in this crisis, during the information age. One important element in this crisis management situation is that even as early as November 1996, Edelman and Odwalla took full advantage of the Internet to give reporters and consumers immediate access to information about the recall. Although Odwalla did not have a corporate or promotional Web site, the company's crisis-related site was up and running within 48 hours. Based on its experience in the Odwalla case, Edelman PR has developed an online response product that enables clients to establish crisis preparedness sites on their Intranets. (Mogel, 2002, p. 227) The technology of the day was utilized to its fullest, in addition to a multimedia campaign explaining to those who had the product that was recalled to dispose of it and also telling customers and those affected of their intention to produce accountability with regard to the crisis.
